there's a reason for that.

sendmail (and other mailers) need to use multiple DNS resource record types
(not just "A" and "AAAA" records, but also MX and a few newer ones).   You
can't put MX records in /etc/hosts

Set up a local DNS server with an alternate view that contains the internal
hostnames.
