you cant use the smart array's without raid to access the disk.
if you want to see each disk behind an smart array you must configure a
raid 0 for each disk (which can easily be done with the smart array cli
tools).
but you wouldn't see the smart data and cache infos for the disks (only
the raid infos the smart array will report).
i think ZFS would be better of with an HBA (not an raid ctrl) and 1-2
write zilla's.
keep in mind that the P2xx/P4xx smart arrays have a limit of 32-64
(afaik) raid's (after you add the advanced licence) so max 64 disk (each
as a single raid 0)
P812 has a limit of 128 (afaik) raid's.

If they are JBOD's does the Smart Array Controller make any diff, tho

Buy the cheapest one or ?
Thanks people.

Hi,
the MSA30/60/70 and D2000 series enclosures are jbods, you will see
every drive as per disk.
if you want an HP branded HBA (not raid ctrl) try this one:
HP SC08e part number 614988-B21
(6GB SAS)
we have an DL360G5 with 8 MSA60 (two stacks of each 4 enclosures) and
an SC08e running solaris 10 with TSM on top.
runs fine..
afaik, you cant use the disk led's from solaris.

I find those HP D2600 enclosures quite fascinating.
So, I would clearly need a good SAS controller for the host machine.
Can anyone point me at some controller that would pair well.
Say if I would stack 2x D2600 together ?
Thanks allot guys.:)
Best regards,
We are probably getting the DL360G7 + P411 with 512MB BBWC + D2600.
I couldn't find any details on the "LSI 9208" card. Typo?
Yes - LSI SAS 9200-8e is probably the one. Basically you want one with
a chipset supported by the mpt_sas driver. 'man mpt_sas' says these
are the LSI SAS200x/2108 chips.
<http://www.lsi.com/products/storagecomponents/Pages/LSISAS9200-8e.aspx>
The only thing I'd say about the DL360G7 is that IIRC there are only
two PCIe slots so if you want more HBAs, or more NICs (it has 4 on the
motherboard - bnx driver), you're a bit constrained.
Does ZFS still prefer JBOD/direct access to the disks?
Yes.
