The existing OpenSolaris JeOS work was partly motivated for such uses, we are looking at getting a similar minimal configuration working for OI. It should be fairly simple to go from that to a nice small virtual image in the main cloud formats (just as JeOS did). Given some of the benefits that the illumos kernel comes with in regards storage and networking, I suspect it will make a very nice base cloud compute image.

This would lower the entry barrier for a lot of potential users. Perhaps a VMware image and/or OVF template would also be of help to make the project more popular.
