it's comforting to know that, thanks for the reply.
I've started looking at the code of Andrew (Dalke), but in the meantime, it 
would be great 
if you could provide other pointers.

Very likely, I would try re-implementing everything in Python, then somebody 
with more 
experience than me should port that to C++, I guess.
