Well, I really wanted to present a destination and locale for 2011 and we had
previously discussed Paris, but even then—at OOoCon in Budapest—the Paris idea
was never quite absolutely certain, and it depended upon a lot of uncertain
things (like a lower cost than I had envisioned). And then came the cost
effect. I started investigating just how much it would cost, and how difficult
it would be to organize. Given that the main appeal of OOoCons, I think we all
agree, is the opportunity to meet developers, contributors, and spend time with
them discussing things at good friendly places without fretting about cost (for
hotels, meals, snacks, coffee, whatever), Paris seemed less feasible. And it
got worse, with the difficulties of actually organizing it. Berlin or Hamburg
offer much cheaper prices, now (and it's getting better, probably), plus much
easier organizational options.

Indeed, it was not.

No one more than I would like to make this process as transparent as it could
be and to make it, too, as professionalized as it could be and as we could
afford. 2011 is now. And the rush seems to require serious compromise. What I'd
like to do, then, is to go with a Berlin or Hamburg proposal and layout why—as
I hinted at above—and then get things *going*. I've helped to organize quite a
few OOoCons, and there is never enough time, never enough people, never enough
money, never enough enough.

But now if we agree on one or the other of the cities, we can engage a lot of
local help, especially from the Hamburg team, and see about provisioning a
great conference venue, hotels, travel arrangements, and so on. I really want
2011's OOoCon to be a brilliant, fresh success leaving only memories of wanting
more.
