The application link command on my desktop to ocular was followed by " --unique %F", whatever that means, wherever that came from... removing it solved the problem. For debugging purposes I started okular via terminal "LANG=en okular", and this worked, while starting okular from my desktop icon link gave okulars wrong behavior...
