What failed was an internal release validation for certain customers of
a certain product. If we would know what the exact problem was, that
would be in the ticket.

I believe cancelling a release with a known regression - in particular
when it's not fully understood - is the right thing to do.

The "fix" that we have was backing out a change that we identified to
cause the problem; I hope that's ok?

Finally, whether we branch or back out the changes IMHO is a matter of
taste, and should be left to the Release Manager for this release. Once
the release is out (hopefully tomorrow), I'll revert the reverts, and it
really should not matter how we got there.

Reminder: any PMC member can initiate a release and execute it at any
point of time (with 3 approvals).
