I looked for the Tricolored Heron twice today. At 11:30 I scoped the area carefully from the town boat ramp but could not find it. An hour later I stopped in again and the heron was hiding in the large willow tree that is just north of the four private docks, along the west side of the creek. This is the same area that the bird was in yesterday, shortly after I found it. Photos of the bird are here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/107683885@N07/
DIRECTIONS: The bird is on the west branch of Twelve Mile Creek in the Town of Wilson. This creek is the western boundary of Wilson-Tuscarora State Park. Driving west on Rt 18 from the Village of Wilson, proceed past the state park and over the big bridge at Roosevelt Beach. After crossing the bridge make the first immediate right. Go about a quarter mile to a road on your right that leads down to a boat ramp. The bird was on the private docks toward the north on the west side of the creek but then fed for a while at the peninsula separating the creek from Lake Ontario. It can be hard to see at times, especially if it is out by the peninsula or hiding in the willows, so patience may be required. Try looking from the town docks at the boat ramp. Note that there are Black-crowned Night-Herons and Green Herons here also. Alternatively, one could try looking from the state park on the east side of the creek but the lighting would be poor on a sunny afternoon. Good birding!
