Highlights of the many reports received March 7 through March 14 from the Niagara Frontier Region include SNOWY OWL, BLACK-HEADED GULL, FISH CROW and migrants. March 8, a report that a SNOWY OWL had been present for four days at Sunset Beach, at the mouth of Johnson Creek at Lake Ontario in the Orleans County Town of Carlton. SNOWY OWL also still at the Niagara Falls Airport, though viewing access is limited. On the lower Niagara River, March 13, a BLACK-HEADED GULL and 4 LITTLE GULLS at the Lewiston Docks. In Buffalo, a FISH CROW was heard and seen at the Ontario Street boat launch on March 9. The daily Hamburg Hawkwatch has begun at Lakeside Cemetery on Camp Road. Early flights have included TURKEY VULTURE, NORTHERN HARRIER, SHARP-SH. HAWK, COOPER'S HAWK, RED- SHOULDERED HAWK and RED-TAILED HAWK. At least 4 ROUGH-LEGGED HAWKS in the Iroquois Refuge, and a dark phase ROUGH-LEGGED HAWK in the Town of Yates. Waterfowl migrants have been abundant with arriving swans, geese and marsh ducks mingling with winter divers. SNOW GEESE in numbers up to 60 at the Iroquois Refuge and Lake Ontario, plus a possible hybrid ROSS'S GOOSE x SNOW GOOSE at Cayuga Pool in the Iroquois Refuge. CACKLING GEESE in the Lake Ontario Plains on Johnson Creek Road, and three locations in the Iroquois areas. TUNDRA SWANS ranging across the region. Scarce numbers of WOOD DUCK, GADWALL, BLUE- WINGED TEAL, NORTHERN SHOVELER, GREEN-WINGED TEAL, LESSER SCAUP and RUDDY DUCK, and multiples of AMERICAN WIGEON, AMERICAN BLACK DUCK, MALLARD, NORTHERN PINTAIL, CANVASBACK, REDHEAD, RING-NECKED DUCK, GREATER SCAUP, BUFFLEHEAD, COMMON GOLDENEYE, HOODED MERGANSER, COMMON MERGANSER and RED-BR. MERGANSER. Recent waterbird counts on Lake Ontario - off Wilson, 32 RED-THROATED LOONS, 14 HORNED GREBES and 30 RED-NECKED GREBES, plus 100 WHITE-WINGED SCOTERS and 140 LONG-TAILED DUCKS. Similar counts of HORNED GREBES and RED-NECKED GREBES at Point Breeze and Olcott. Across the region, first wave of landbird migrants and arrivals, especially in the spring weather window on March 9 - KILLDEER, HORNED LARK, AMERICAN PIPIT, AMERICAN ROBIN, SONG SPARROW, RED-W. BLACKBIRD and COMMON GRACKLE. At a feeder in North Boston, 600 RED-W. BLACKBIRDS included 2 female RED-W. BLACKBIRDS, plus a RUSTY BLACKBIRD and 6 BROWN-HEADED COWBIRDS. March 12, TREE SWALLOW at the Modern Wetlands in Lewiston. And, EASTERN BLUEBIRDS exploring nest boxes at several locations. Also this week, NORTHERN SHRIKE on County Road in Clarence. SHORT-EARED OWLS still at Molasses Hill Road in Bethany and Posson Road in Shelby. Two GREAT HORNED OWLS calling on Grand Island. And an EASTERN SCREECH-OWL calling at midday on the Swallow Hollow Trail in the Iroquois Refuge. The Bird Report will be updated Thursday evening, March 21.
