We spent a few hours birding the eastern portion of Dune Road before heading to
the Calverton Grasslands in the early afternoon. At Shinnecock Inlet there were
over four hundred Common Eider, as well as an adult Lesser Black-backed Gull on
a sandbar north of the inlet. Our FOS Clapper Rail was feeding in one of the
few open marsh ditches on Dune Road east of Dockers Restaurant. We did not see
the Snowy Owl reported last week. At the Calverton Grasslands (the old Grumman
Property) there was one Rough-legged Hawk, one American Kestrel, two Northern
Harriers, and six Red-tailed Hawks.
