Highlights of reports received September 24 through October 1 from
the Niagara Frontier Region include WHITE IBIS, AMERICAN AVOCET,
RED-NECKED PHALAROPE and EARED GREBE.
The WHITE IBIS discovered September 20 in the egret roost in the
Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area was reported September 24 through
27, and was still present on the 29th, after a strong storm passed
over the area on the previous day. The location can be reached by
hiking north along the dike between Wood and Hunt Club Marsh from
Owen/Bartel Road, or west along the south side of the canal at
Meadville Road.
Other reports from the Tonawanda Wildlife Management Area - a late
CLIFF SWALLOW on Meadville Road September 26, and on the 26th and
27th, 11 shorebird species including 3 LONG-B. DOWITCHERS, 2 WILSON'S
SNIPE and a STILT SANDPIPER, in the Griswold Road marsh, just north of
Route 77.
September 27 on Grand Island, an exceptional count of 5 very rare
AMERICAN AVOCETS on the Beaver Island State Park beach, on the west
branch of the Niagara River. On the 29th at Tifft Nature Preserve in
Buffalo, 2 rare RED-NECKED PHALAROPES at the South Viewing Blind.
EARED GREBES have become annual visitors at the Batavia Waste Water
Plant. September 27, 4 EARED GREBES on the ponds, plus a female
BUFFLEHEAD. The plant is on Industrial Blvd. off Route 33; birders
must check in at the office, and the gates close at 3 PM.
September 29 on Lake Ontario off the Town of Wilson, a PARASITIC
JAEGER with NORTHERN PINTAIL, GREATER SCAUP, COMMON LOON and three
flocks of BONAPARTE'S GULLS. Two JAEGERS were also noted on Lake Erie
at Buffalo and Hamburg this week.
Warblers are still in migration. In a Wilson yard, TENNESSEE
WARBLER, ORANGE-CR. WARBLER, BL.-THR. GREEN WARB., MAGNOLIA WARBLER
and OVENBIRD; and at the Batavia Waste Water Plant, NASHVILLE WARBLER,
YELLOW-R. WARBLER, PALM WARBLER, BLACKPOLL WARBLER and COMMON
YELLOWTHROAT.
Also this week, an unexpected TURKEY VULTURE feeding by River Road
in the City of Tonawanda.
