Hi Emma If you can afford to live in London I'd stay there - most of the work seems to be there. There are a few roles up here where the air is clear and you don't have to wait 6 months to see a doctor but you will have less choice.
Lots of contract work around, or there was when I was looking. It wasn't worth it for me to go down to London because I would have been left with less than I can get remote up North but if you're already managing to live there ... That said, I might have an opening in my company but we're still planning, so don't bank on it :) Company is based in Birmingham and I'm their remote CTO in Merseyside - they found it very hard to get a senior Rails person so I got it. I want some more people based in the UK I can work with directly but still need to talk it through with the board. Seem to remember there's a group based in Shoreditch who also do training - have a google for 'em. The only way to improve is to look at the whole system people are operating with, the basic tools, their training, how much initiative they are allowed, are you measuring the right things (more about that later) and then you can improve. But it's the *system* you improve, not the people you beat into performing even worse."
