It was probably inevitable.  But the agencies make it much worse, by, like you 
say, removing your ability to describe your value to the client.

There's a bigger problem here, that the network of developers is not linked 
very well with the network of people who want our services.  Don't fancy 
tackling that as a side project do you? ;)
