You could also tweak the LRO timeout in a similar fashion based upon
traffic patterns as well.  In fact, extremely sophisticated things can
be done here to deal with the LRO timing as seen on WAN vs. LAN
streams.

The accurate statement is "extremely complicated things need to be done here to deal with the LRO timing as seen on WAN vs. LAN streams". Not to mention dealing with retransmissions and the dynamics of congestion control.

What's clear is that it won't be hard to put in a benchmarking tool: it's making this a usable feature in real life that's difficult. TCP is not only used in a "two systems back to back" scenario.

The question is, are we going to have a fair assessment of the pros and cons of every option or not?
