I don't know about the number, but it IS possible to show a flag in the index indicating the presence of one or more attachments... I set mine that way, but don't remember how. I'll take a quick gander at my muttrc and maybe it'll jump out at me... # the default format #set index_format="%4C %Z %{%b %d} %-15.15L (%?l?%4l&%4c?) %s" # this one shows attachments #set index_format="%4C %Z %{%b %d} %-15.15L %?X?{%2X}&%4c? %s" set index_format="%4C %Z %{%b %d} %-20.20L %?X?^&%4c? %s" OK, that last one is what sets the attachment indicator. Looks like it is the "^&" out near the end. Prolly a good idea to look it up in the mutt doc before butchering yours, though.
