In addition to the advice already given by Patrick (good, but somewhat indirect): Run a long lived ssh process on the other side of the VPN with port forwarding (that is, the -L option, or probably multiple -L options). Bind to local address of that to the VPN server address (I'll call that A_vpn). Point the remote to the Google (or whatever) servers. Then tell mutt to use the fake servers on A_vpn you have just set up. -- Please don't Cc: me privately on mailing lists and Usenet, if you also post the followup to the list or newsgroup.
