Yes, the lowest common denominator sets the standard, and infuriates
those who do not willingly wallow in chaos. The simplest solution to
your problem is to fix your misconfigured mutt, so that it works as it
should. (And does for all the rest of us.)

Can you please post here, showing what your '#' is mapped to, and what
is mapped to break-thread? Then we could advise.

If you have mapped '#' to some other function, and nothing replaces it,
then just choose another key to bind to break-thread.
