Are you by any chance confusing the Help for your terminal emulator with the help for mutt? Your terminal emulator probably has an F1 shortcut that captures the keystroke before it reaches mutt. Anyway, this is what the manual says: 3.119. mail_check Type: number Default: 5 This variable configures how often (in seconds) mutt should look for new mail. Also see the $timeout variable.
