How to ask mutt to not check for new mail

Dear all,

I would like to disable checking of new mail after mutt starts up. I
have the following set:

set timeout = 0
set mail_check = 0

but mutt still checks. Which variable am I missing?

I found references to imap_checkinterval, but it has been removed [1]

Note that I am using offlineimap and mutt-kz.
