What you'd like instead IMHO is for mutt to
continue with other authentication methods after
failing with CRAM-MD5.

Currently mutt doesn't continue because most
probably this error is treated like "wrong
password" (so there's no sense to continue trying
the same wrong password with less secure methods).

If it's possible to distinguish "wrongly
advertized auth method" from "wrong password"
error reply, it's possible to fix the problem in
elegant way.

Can you please send .muttdebug log? Or relevant
portions of it (SMTP error reply to CRAM-MD5
attempt)?
