Two questions about variable width fonts, then.... First, how does Mutt do with variable width fonts? I gather that it does handle them, but how? My version (1.5.21, according to "mutt -v") doesn't appear to handle them (as variable width) at all, even using Mutt on an X11 xterm (unless there's a .muttrc option or a command line option to xterm that I don't know about). Second, how do e-mail clients that handle variable width fonts keep text that is meant to be aligned over multiple lines aligned the way the sender intended? It has to do this, but HOW does it do it? ASCII drawings, tables (as discussed in a recent thread here), etc., must be handled correctly. I know that in MUAs that allow variable width fonts, they FAIL at this miserably. Ok, that's crappy software, but I've yet to see one that DOES work.
