I did the same but before gmail.

When gmail originated you would not receive copies of mails you posted to
lists as they were considered duplicates (they existed in your "sent"
mail).  So I used gmail addresses to receive mail taking advantage of
gmail's excellent spam sorting and only posted via my isp's smtp, using
gmail return addr's.
