I believe in a recent commit, mutt has been made more tolerant towards
that restriction. Ah here it is:
Yes, 1.5.21 displays the subject correctly in the index view (besides
the � at the end of the line), but in the message view the subject is
displayed wrong again.
This happens because Mutt joins all continuation lines in the Subject when
storing it in the internal data structure, and the index view uses the data
structure. However, the pager works directly on the message header on a
line-by-line basis. The issue with the example in the OP's message is that
the RFC2047 encoded words are not allowed to span lines. Mutt can't currently
handle this.
