I simulate changing roles by going into different folders -- if i want to be in my Foo Role, i change to my =foo folder, which is where i probably already am since that's where messages sent to my Foo address go. Using folder-hooks, the act of changing into a folder can trigger just about anything you want. I strongly recommend you read through people's .muttrc's. A lot of them are posted to the web, and let me know if you'd like to see mine. I remember having all sorts of frustrations coming from Pine to mutt, but one by one i found that there was a .muttrc setting that would fix the problem.
