The file system is ReiserFS and it's local, however the machine is fairly new but it's a laptop so the hdparm figures are pretty lousy. Evolution would open the folder in a snap. I guess there's some caching going on there to. I have another partition with ext3. An operation like "find <mailfolder>| wc -l" would be noticeably slower on ext3 then reiserfs I moved to ReiserFS for my maildir after reading the hype at http://www.jedi.claranet.fr/qmail-reiserfs-howto.html, and at least at my computer the hype holds true. op -- o polite http://plusseven.com/gpg/
