Yes. I use fmt for this, and had never heard of par.
Just replace 'par 72' with 'fmt -72'.  Or you could do
'fmt -s -72' which will split long lines but not join short
lines; the formatting isn't as nice, but at least quoted
text doesn't get > embedded quotation markers like > this.
