Ah now I see a pattern, you can put the <mail> thingy in the set editor
bit. So how might it look with this line:

 set editor="vim +'/^$/' -c ':set textwidth=72'"

like this?

 set editor="vim +'/^$/' -c ':set textwidth=72'<mail>"
