mutt + IMAP works very well for me. It should be available on most Linux
distributions. I now use the FreeBSD port.

I'm using the IMAP daemon from the University of Washington. It's very
easy to install: just enable it in the /etc/inetd.conf - that's all.  If
you plan to access your IMAP account via the Internet, keep in mind that
this daemon had some serious security problems in the past.
