Thanks for the response, but yeah, this is the case. I checked my system
and mailx only exists (uninstalled) in the ports directory ;)

I'm thinking this must be mutt, since it was old mail (thus not caused
by new mail being written incorrectly) that got messed up, and mutt is
the only program that touches my mailboxes after procmail writes to
them.

Hrm, if I figure this out, I'll let you all know, since it seems I'm not
the only person suffering from it.
