oddly enough, I'm more likely to use PuTTY when reading email - with pine.
(pine doesn't do a good job with PuTTY's colors, btw).

PuTTY has a number of configure options to change function-keys, etc.,
(and can set $TERM correspondingly, but unfortunately its authors didn't
bother relating the two).
