you don't mention what type of filesystem you're on. certain filesystems are known to be pretty slow with Maildir style mailboxes (ie ext2fs) once they start to get really big. in theory maildir should be faster. you might also try sorting by date/date instead of threads/date when opening large folders. the maildir threading algorithm has been improved since the version of mutt you appear to be using, so if possible, you should upgrade to the newest dev release. check the archives for a very similar discussion a month or so back. w -- GPG Public Key: http://infinitejazz.net/will/pgp/
