Sorry to seem so dense..... but when I press character <a>
I get the "Alias as: " prompt. 
What else do I need to do.

I am using Mutt 1.2.5i on Linux 2.2.5-15 (RH 6.0).
I have not thus far located any reference to this in 
man muttrc
man mutt
or
the internal mutt help list.
but then, my vision is poor :-(
