First, I am using the default version of Mutt that comes with SUSE 7.1 PPC (which has very good Japanese support in it for the first time). It is version 1.3.12i-0. I do not think it was patched for Japanese as the SUSE developer working on Japanese support has not had anything to do with Mutt. I have fixed my original problem without the use of any patches. I was about to build a patched version with Kikutani-sans patches but first took a look a /mutt-1.3.17i-ja0/mutt-ja.rc In it, there are muttrc settings specific to Japanese, so I thought I would throw them into my muttrc and see what happens. (I am a newbie and anyone with a brain might have figured this out already). There were about four errors, which I went back and commented out and then with the remaining alterations, I had working Japanese. Perfect if not for the occasional screen redraw that I have to do (occasional, not always). Any way to over come this? The lines that worked for me are: setcharset="euc-jp" setsendcharset="us-ascii:iso-2022-jp" setrfc2047_parameters=yes I've no idea what the last one does or if it really is that important. Something to do with attachments? So, to summarise, I am running an English language environment, calling applications for Japanese with LANG=ja_JP <app>. I am using the above version of Mutt in a kterm with canna and kinput2. My Mutt folder menu has a 月 where the month column is, and all Japenese sent to me has clearly visible subject lines and body text. I use the alpha version of vim without any problems to compose messages. Bliss! (and largely due to one very keen and thorough developer at SUSE who has been setting up their CJK support).
