Indeed. I upgraded to a personal copy (--prefix=$HOME) of ncurses 5.2.
No more terminal display problems. Thanks!

I still observe this. I execute mutt -p and when I select one of the
messages, mutt dumps core with the message:
Segmentation fault (core dumped)
I can use "mutt -f =postponed" to view messages in =postponed without
any problem, as long, it seems, as I don't try to update the file.
If I try to delete one, as soon as I exit with 'q', I get the same
core dump and message, and the message is not deleted. If I mark for
deletion and don't try to write the mailbox, i.e., exit with 'x', no
core dump occurs.
I just did more testing. It seems I can't update any mail folders.
If I mark a message for deletion, whether by using 'd' or 's', as
soon as I try to commit the changes, whether by using 'q' or '$', I
get a segfault core dump.
So it seems that I can't modify mail folders. Help!
