There is a (sort of) workaround which I re-discovered while being
frustrated by the above problem:-

    Issue the 'c' command
    Enter '?' to get a directory listing
    Do 'c' again, which mow means 'chdir' rather than change folder
    Enter the path to the folder which has both mail and sub-folders
    Since this is a 'chdir' command it opens showing the sub-folders

I think a simple fix for this problem would be the addition of an
explicit 'chdir' command when in the index.
