I don't really think that it's religious; I personally think that it's
from a standpoint of maintainability and complaints. While it is a
really cool (and extensible!) thing to have, it also invites some
problems (like delivering mail to compressed folders) for the novice.
By leaving it as a contributed feature patch, it doesn't have to be
supported by the mutt-dev group at all, and yet Roland has done such
a good job maintaining and polishing it that it is a piece of cake to
drop in. The RPM guys even have both with- and without-patch versions
available (right, Thomas?) so that you don't have to mess with source.
So, in short, until such time as it is not so nicely maintained by
contribution, I expect that it will stay out of the CVS tree.
