Personally, I have mbox folders with several 1e5 messages,
and have not experienced any problems with them. I'm
using ~/.tmp as my TMPDIR, though, so there is generally
far more than enough free space in that directory.
Actually, you may wish to notice that, depending on your
file system implementation, mbox may be far more efficient
than maildir for large mailboxes. Just imagine a rather
traditional Unix file system design having to deal with
7k5 files in _one_ directory...
