MFT stands for "Mail-Followup-To".

They are headers designated to provide a hint (or instruction) to a
mailer program as to where a list reply (or, "followup") should be
sent.

The main purpose for them is to prevent you getting duplicate copies
of emails when people use group-reply when responding to your posts,
and so you get one copy through the list and one copy through being
listed separately as a recipient. When you tell Mutt (or any MUA which
is capable of creating MFT headers) which lists you are subscribed to,
it will create a proper Mail-Followup-To header to every post you send
to such lists. Then when someone does a group-reply (or a list-reply),
the MFT header will tell the email program that you don't want to get
a copy of the message separately (because you're already on the list).

MFT headers can also include other addresses than list addresses; these
belong to people who are "taking part in the discussion" but are *not*
subscribed to the mailing list.

If you look at the headers of this email, you will see that the
Mail-Followup-To has been set to the mutt-users list address and your
own address. This is because I don't know whether you're subscribed
to the list or not, and used group-reply to answer your message. So
this message gets sent to you privately as well as the list. If your
email had included a MFT header, then group-reply would have taken that
into account, and acted appropriately (most likely directing the reply
only to the list).

My own address is not listed in the MFT header because Mutt knows that
I'm subscribed to the mutt-users list, so I will be getting a copy of
any replies already through that address.

I hope that this explanation is helpful,
Mikko
