It does work.  Thanks.

The weird thing is that when used this way it seems to be essentially
reinventing the option (removed, if I recall) for (when opening a
folder) pointing to the first unread message, or first new message.

For example, if I set see_old then the pointer starts at the first new
message.  If I unset see_old then the pointer starts at the first
unread message.
