You might want to try the patch at
<http://pug.schrab.com/ats.mark_old-1.1.2-1.diff>
It separates the two functions of $mark_old. So, you can keep mark_old
set, then unset see_old (the variable added by that patch). Then mutt
will have messages marked as old internally, but it will treat them as
new for everything but determining if the mailbox has new mail.
At least, I'm pretty sure it'll work for that, I wrote it so I could use
the oposite settings, and didn't think that these settings would be
useful.
