I have two guesses as to what might be happening:

1) Mutt treats ^G specially, as a cancel/break key. For example, you
can cancel most (all?) prompts with it.  Thus you won't be able to bind
it, or rather, the binding won't come into effect.

2) Your xterm is eating away the ^G.  This is pretty unlikely, but
possible anyway.  Does it work in other apps?


I rather strongly suspect 1 though.

Incidentally, when I do ":bind index ^G group-reply", I don't get
^G listing in my key-binding list.  No error either.  I'm using Mutt
version 1.1.2.
