That's easy to do if you want it; the package you're looking for is ssmtp. But I definitely prefer having an MTA locally; I can enqueue email when I'm not logged in, and have it go out the door as soon as I hook up. I can be sending email when I'm dialed up, and having the connection drop doesn't lose any email, nor hang my MUA. -Bennett
