True enough, forgot about that. :-(  But there's no obvious work-around.

Indeed, but this might be a bit annoying for interactive use.  I wonder
if it would be possible to do this in macros only?

I think the best solution would be to have a save-pattern function,
even if by default it would be unbound.  But that's a great way to
add code bloat (?), because then there really should be a *-pattern
command for almost every message handling function.
