Anyway I solved the problem by disabling USE_DOTLOCK (in config.h). I
know this is an ugly hack, but I had no other way.

I spent a long time looking into this problem. When I was reading the
man page of mailx, I came to know that our site uses rmail and not 
sendmail for sending mails. I changed the sendmail variable to
/bin/rmail in .muttrc and the problem was solved.
