oops, I didn't ask what type of mailbox you were using. I don't know whether
the issues are different with MH/Maildir-style mailboxes. I'm pretty sure
the "buffy-size" option has no effect when using directory-style mailboxes.
If your mailboxes are on an ext2 system that's mounted just defaults,rw,
atime shouldn't be a problem. You might try moving your mail to mbox format
just to see if that cures the problem.

I don't know about a script for changing mailbox formats, but tagging all
the messages and saving them to a new mailbox after you've changed the
default mbox format has worked for me...
