I saw that ebuild update but haven't updated yet :) In any case, I solved the OpenBSD issue. Problem between keyboard and chair. Setting out to try Kevin's suggestion, I found I had set ssl_usesystemcerts=no. There was a question mark in the comment next to it and I don't remember why I changed away from the default here or what I was checking.
