For that case, Mutt is uncollapsing every thread, passing in the parent message of each thread.

But surely it is not intended to uncollapse every thread, just because I accidentally happen to reopen the mailbox because I saved a copy of an outgoing message in the current mailbox?

A reopen typically occurs because of an external modification, such as conflicting flags or a deletion. Perhaps something in your setup is triggering this somehow. If you are using IMAP, you might check if there is an auto-expunge setting and disable that, for instance.

Otherwise you can try to track down why mx_check_mailbox() is returning MUTT_REOPENED.
