The problem went away when I force rebuilt everything, including po/mutt.pot. I still need to investigate more what's going on, because I think something it not right.
I've pushed a branch to 'kevin/gettext-bugs' with two work-in-progress commits: - one forcing the keymap_alldefs.h regeneration in the top-level Makefile.am.
