I myself don't have a long history hacking with *nix systems. :-) So in general for complicated things like signal handling, I try not to touch it unless it's broken, and rely on hackers like Oswald to help ensure any changes make sense.
The list can be a bit slow to get a wide response, but Oswald did already have a suggestion worth trying. Would it possible for you to try moving the mutt_unblock_signals_system() calls just before the waitpid()?
