I hope that distros ship updated versions of stock gpgme in case of
security problems. I tried to be pretty conservative with gpgme
requirements for mutt (iirc gpgme 1.4, 5 years old) but some features
won't work with old versions. This requires a bit of extra code and we
have the problem that these dependencies are hard to test.

However for, let's say TOFU support, we sureley require newer versions
of GPGME. To enable this it is also possible to statically link against
gpgme - this makes it possible to build a decent mutt also on old
distros.

Salam-Shalom,

   Werner
